The initial concept for ‘Nest’ arose from a desire to combine the organic theme with that of the previous history of the site being a bird aviary. The bower form alludes to the peacock’s tail, while being a symbol of the native bird life such as the satin bower bird that makes its nest from sticks and grasses in a similar form and adorns it with ‘blue’ found objects.
The interlacing form of ‘Nest’ acts as a symbol for habitat regeneration and urban renewal that encapsulates the aspiration, optimism and cultural vibrancy of Mt. Gravatt community. Inspired by the natural environment this sculptural form references both the birdlife and native flora of the region.
The bower-like composition of ‘Nest’ offers a tactile seating experience and a place of contemplation.
