A contemporary sculpture for the lobby space of One Middle Road, Chadstone, Foundation (monument), is a dynamic light work which creates a unique sense of place whilst enhancing the lobby area of the landmark entrance to Chadstone Shopping Centre. Responding to the architecture and space of the site, this sculpture considers the contrast between light and shadow, old and new. Constructed from three large panels, skewe and slanted to create an asymmetrical ‘totemic’ sculpture, its design incorporates layered lines of textured clear acrylic which mimic traditional leadlight decorative textured glass, encased in a bold dark framework.
This work is a response to the male dominated history of Light and Space movement, specifically reflecting on Dan Flavin’s monument for V. Tatlin fluorescent series. Now reincarnated, Foundation (monument) exists as a sculpture which harnesses the powers of light and texture to alter states of perception, conjure memory and immerse viewers in a moment in time. This commission is an important contribution to the Chadstone Art Collection and is the first light sculpture to be acquired by the Collection.
Meagan Streader pushes the limits of light within sculpture and installation by manipulating, reinterpreting and extending upon the boundaries of constructed spaces. Meagan completed a BFA/Visual Arts at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane (2010) and is currently based in Melbourne (Naarm/Birrarung-ga).
