About This Project

ADA Consulting were appointed as art consultants by the Level Crossing Removal Project to commission a mural artwork for the Patterson River Bridge.

An integrated art strategy that aimed to infuse the social, environmental, cultural and Indigenous ethos of the local area was developed and was further extended to incorporate a mentorship is the design and installation of the artwork.

Artist Matt Adnate was selected from a shortlist of artists with a concept that pays homage to Boonwurrung Country, the local bird life and celebrates the stories and history of the area.

Adnate approached two First Nation artists, Emily Gittins and Boonwurrung artist Jarra Karalinar to assist in a mentorship through the creation of the mural and worked with WSP to engage Traditional Owners for endorsement of the final design.

“This Mural references the connection of the Boonwurrung People to this land and their special relationship  with the Burrunan Dolphin. The Burrunan is a unique species to the Port Phillip Bay, Gippsland Lakes and Tassie. The Burrunan has a very special relationship with the Boonwurrung, in particular they are connected to women. The Young women would journey with their matriarchs to the special birthing places to learn motherhood, community and nurturing their children. It was a place to practice scared women’s business during special seasons. The pattern is influenced by Kulin visual language and design that is found on shields and possum skin cloaks. South Eastern design is made up of geometric patterns. The Mana Gum leaves connect the land and the sea.” – Jarra Karalinar.

Adnate has worked closely with indigenous people of their native land, especially with Indigenous Australians. He paints large scale murals around Australia and the world, creating a statement of reclaiming the land that was always theirs.
