Integrated into the site and in harmony with the landscape, Salt Wedge gives form to an illusive river mouth phenomena where collisions of salt and fresh water create a physical dividing wedge. A low relief sculpture, James developed the piece from a work in paper made in situ at the Birrarung (Yarra River). Magnifying the surging ocean tides; collision with the less dense freshwater flow, Salt Wedge draws on the opposition between invisible and apparent forces at the site.
Based in Melbourne (Naarm) and London, James’ conceptually driven practice focuses on the way that cultural and natural forces intersect to shape both landscape and perception, anchoring his works in a site-based approach.
