About This Project

Robyne Latham’s Orchid reflects on interconnectedness and First Nations’ practices of caring for Country. Wrought in a dusty pink patinaed bronze that will witness the passing of time, this sculpture captures the endangered Rosella Spider Orchid (Caladenia Rosella), a species native to the area, as it begins to unfurl it’s delicate petals.

Interwoven in the imagery of this exquisite flower is the complex relationship between the orchid, a native bee, and a microscopic fungus that has enabled the flower to flourish on the land of the Kulin Nation for over 40,000. Robyne, a Yamatji woman originally from Western Australia, consulted with Wurundjeri Elder Aunty Di Kerr who has endorsed the sculpture.

Robyne Latham’s Indigenous heritage underpins her art practice, which spans the mediums of sculpture, painting, ceramics, installation and public-art performance. Robyne’s award-winning works are represented in the collections of the National Gallery of Victoria, Shepparton Art Gallery, Deakin University, La Trobe University, The Berndt Museum and the Koorie Heritage Trust Museum.
